January-Feburary 2007 Update

Dear One(s).

What a wonderful time of the year! I make walks along the driveway and the road around the house and enjoy watching the many birds that come to the bird-feeder to eat. The daffodils have been beautiful. Usually we are in India in February, so we miss these sights.

Things with us continue much the same, with the infusions, medicines, and consultations with the doctors. The Doctor/Radiologist who read the PET scan said that the radiation treatments continue to work for ten months to a year, so he will monitor the lesion on my spine where I had the Cyber Knife and the standard radiation treatments on the other spot. He questioned another small area in my liver as “suspicious” of being metastatic, so I may have a biopsy next week to determine if it is a lesion or a cyst. Regardless, the thinking is that I will continue with the chemotherapy treatments; in addition to the nutraceuticals I am taking every day to strengthen my body. Everyone says I look good. I have felt stronger for the past month, and have been able to work longer hours in my “office” in the den.

Dave Miller’s DVD: I urge you to order this DVD (5 lessons that need to be used as a wake-up message for the church). By Dave Miller of Apologetics Press. Website for orders: www.ApologeticsPress.org or call 1-800-234-8558.

Before I begin on the overseas report, I want to mention something that Betty and I feel is very important. About a month ago, Betty wrote an article entitled “What Are We — As a Nation and As the Church — Doing to Ourselves? It will be in the up-coming issue of The Voice of Truth International. Among the many who responded to the article was brother Dave Miller of Apologetics Press. In agreement with all that was said, he sent a DVD he has made during a seminar, entitled “The Silencing of God in America”. There are five lessons, each about 55 minutes long. We strongly urge that these lessons be shown to Wednesday classes for a quarter. The Lord’s church needs to be awakened to the dire problems that may be in store for us and for our country, if we don’t make some major changes. If you would like a copy of the DVD, you may write to us and we will send one from the batch we personally ordered for sharing. Or you may order them directly from Apologetics Press.

Robert Swain in Sri Lanka and India

Some wonderful things have been happening in the various parts of the work overseas! Our hearts traveled with Robert when he left the States for Sri Lanka the end of January, and traveled again with Wayne and Janet when they landed in New Delhi the end of February. Robert was able to spend two weeks with Reggie and the other brethren in Colombo and Negombo, to see the tsunami work being done and to discuss foundational plans for beginning a Bible training school there. He took part in numerous home studies and was encouraged with the interest he found among the participants. His reports brought back the early days of our work there before all the bloodshed and violence that has de-stabilized the country.

In Bangalore, India Robert taught in a seminar and also went through classes in Titus and Revelation with the preacher-training group. We are thankful for his love for the work and his desire to be used in whatever ways are beneficial.

P.R. Swamy and Vernon Douglas

“Elder Mahalingam and myself (P.R.Swamy) went to Chandapura ( 22 km from Bangalore), on the Hosur National High way and attended their worship. Mahalingam shared the word of God. Recently a child was born to the local preacher, Sesuraj and his wife and they asked us to name the baby. One of the sisters in the assembly got up from her seat and asked us to name her baby. We said O.K., so she brought the child. We blessed him and asked where is the father. She surprised all of us, saying, “I picked up this child in the corporation dust bin the other day, where it had been abandoned by somebody.” I asked her what name had she selected for the baby, and she said that we have to select. We named the baby “Moses”. Is it a suitable name?

“Some friends brought M.P.M.Swamy to Davis Road. He is my older brother. He left his family several years ago because of his unfaithful wife and came to Bangalore. His wife deserted him and ran away with another man. We shared the gospel with him and he was baptized in 1991. He was all right for some time and I kept him at Davis Road, but then he started drinking and left me. He has been staying some where in Bangalore all these years. Now his friends have brought him to us, very ill. His liver has been damaged fully, but he has stopped drinking and confessed his sins. We have been trying to help him, having him undergo medical treatment etc.

“We were having a one-day seminar at Namakkal, (from Bangalore, about 175 miles). 9 am to 5 pm. Nearly 90 attended, all of them are our preachers and some of their contacts. We took a separate study for the contacts. Ten were baptized. Robert, Douglas and I shared the word of God in the morning session and also in the evening session. All were encouraged.

“While we were in Namakkal news came that my brother had expired at Davis Road. We returned to Bangalore, 12 A.M., and took care of the funeral service. M.P.M.Swamy died in the Lord, a great relief for me.

“One of our members, Danny Smith (a very good personal worker), brought his contact, Mr. Stanley, to Davis Road. He is a US citizen, a green card holder, a nice guy, 67 years old, formerly a Roman Catholic, but converted to 7th Day Adventist.. His wife, one son and one daughter (all are married) are living in USA. He has some family problems. I shared the Bible with him. Today he came for the third time and obeyed the gospel to become a N.T.Christian. He is planning to return to US in March. His one daughter lives in Bloomington and he will be staying with her. He requested me to go with him if I can, to teach his family..

“Just send me one sponsoring letter. The Lord willing I will try for my VISA and if I succeed, I will come to US this year and will stay with the Stanleys. They will take care of my expenses while I am in USA. Brother Stanly wants me to teach the gospel to his family. They are all Tamil people. Please furnish the address of the local church of Christ of Bloomington. Stanley wants to worship with them on Sundays.

Our Bible school students for this session in Bangalore came from different parts of South India, and even from Pune and Hyderabad. In all, 40 gathered. Robert took the Book of Revelation. Every one enjoyed the classes.

“We took Robert to Standard Construction Company, Managing Director, Mr. Suresh. We discussed the plan for the Davis Road construction [to work in a joint venture with the construction company, turning the Davis Road church property over to the company, so that they can build a multi-storied condominium. Half of the building will then belong to the church, for a meeting place, housing for the Swamy and Douglas families, and other needs of the church.] We looked at their drawing and Robert gave good suggestions. I brought this idea to the notice of Pleasanton Elders when brother Ned Royal was alive. We have been praying about this for many many years. God has opened the door now. The Pleasanton church bought this property for church use in 1980 for about $58,000. Land value has appreciated in these 27 years. By God’s grace, we are going to have our facility built without bothering our American brethren, on a 50/50 ratio. The builder is a good and understanding man. Pray for the completion of this plan.”

Wayne and Janet Barrier with Vinay David in New Delhi

Wayne and Janet are still in Asia. They spent some time in New Delhi and were able to conduct meetings there. Since finishing his training at Heritage Christian University in Florence, Vinay David has returned to Delhi and has been busy getting things going in his efforts at evangelism. He wrote: “I have finally gotten a place here in Delhi where I have started a Sunday evening worship service. This place also acts as my office for getting the work going. At present I am having my morning service with the old congregation where I am being used as one of the speakers.

“I am trying to build a strong communication with our radio and literature contacts. I took out all the old files as well as letters and did a survey of their backgrounds and current position. I have contacted about 300 of them, and there are still many others to be contacted. The conclusion I have reached is that there are still a lot of people in the northern part of India who are very interested in knowing the Gospel. I have had two letters from Hindu men — one from the state of Maharashtra and the other from Madhya Pradesh. Both have stated their desire to obey the Lord. I am trying to fix an appointment to meet with them and to have further studies before their baptism.

“At present I am having a study with a German teenage boy here in Delhi. A few Sundays back I went to another part of Delhi and studied with a young family. I hope they will make the right decision soon.”

Sunny and Nargis David to Come to the States

We were surprised to learn that Sunny and Nargis David of New Delhi are planning to come. Sunny wrote: “Regarding our coming over there, I have made all arrangements. We will arrive in Winona on April 9th Monday. Either Charles Thigpen or Wayne will bring us there. We will stay in Winona from 9-13 (Mon-Fri). We plan to just stay there and cook food and do other things around the house. Then we will go with LD and will be with him and Wayne April 14-22.. We will come back in Winona on Apr.23 and will stay there for the meeting until 27th and then we shall leave with Wayne. We will meet at the retreat in Alabama May 10-12 and will come back with you to Heritage and then to Winona. We leave in the morning of 15th to come back here. So do not plan any visits at all. We understand what you are going through. In fact, while we are there in the days I have mentioned, you should plan whatever you want to do, your office work, etc., as we will stay in the house and will take care of things like cooking, cleaning, etc. Please do not misunderstand, we want to be a help in whatever way possible.”

We are humbled by Sunny’s determination to come during this time, and we look forward eagerly to this opportunity for fellowship with him and Nargis.

Also, brother P.K. Varghese of Trivandrum, Kerala, will be coming to the States in June/July. His daughter now lives in New York, and he is visiting her and her family, but he plans to come to Winona for a few days with us. During that time, we plan to record a series of radio sermons for his program over Radio Sri Lanka.

Joshua Gootam in Kakinada, India

Joshua wrote: “One TV company gave an award to SATYA VANI last week in Hyderabad. The award was given to me by the speaker of the Andhra .Pradesh legislature. Many thousands attended the function. The Chief minister’s wife, daughter and son-in-law also attended. The son-in-law was the main speaker. Also some ministers from the A.P. cabinet attended and spoke on that evening. It was shown live all over Hyderabad on local channels. It was really a great honor for the Lord, His church and the work we have been doing. All of us in the family attended and were well received.

“The Government here has really become strict on foreigners teaching and preaching. They sent me a circular to this effect as most of them are coming on tourist visa and that does not allow them to preach. The police have forbidden several open air campaigns of these foreigners the last two months here. On 2nd February when Royce Frederick went to open a church building 60 miles from Kakinada, the police were there ahead of him and did not permit him even to enter the church building. They held him captive temporarily as long as the meeting lasted. After that both Royce and Hershel packed up and simply left the country. The Hindus are really up against the gospel now. The next thing they will do is forbid any money coming in for church work. You might call Hershel or Royce for more information on this.

“We are receiving wonderful response both for Radio and TV. Yesterday when I went to the office, there were more than 300 letters and cards waiting for me on my table — All that for one day’s response! Of course, 75% of them ask to be enrolled in Bible courses as we give out a Bible to all those that complete the course with us. I am sure I am on line for a Guinness Book of World Records for distributing most number of Bibles in Telugu language!”

S. Rajanayagam in Kangayam

“Brother, this is to tell about the meeting we had planned in Mattur. Oh yes, it was a good meeting of not less than 200 hundred people, mostly Hindus. Our TV contact, which is a spinning mill owner, had many of his workers to attend the meeting. He spent at least Rs.10,000/ on his own for all arrangements, including lunch for all, which is quite unusual in India. He is very close to the truth and may obey soon. We need to pray for him and for his family. His wife is very strong in denomination teaching. But, we will have another meeting soon. Please remember them in your prayers.

Rajayanagam Baptism

Rajayanagam Building

[A week later] “Oh, brother, the big man obeyed the gospel along with his mill supervisor today, after a study of 3 1/2 hours of the One True Church, True worship and Salvation. Yes, after the Saturday’s gospel meeting, he took several days to think and contacted me over phone yesterday through one of our graduates to have a further study today. So, I went to his place and I took brother Charlie DiPalma also this time. About 20 of his office staff were in the study and they raised several questions and finally two of them decided to obey. What a day it was and thanks be to God for His soul-saving powerful word. He gave one of the buildings for church meeting and it was great on his part. Hope and pray that we can build a sound and solid congregation there. Thank you for your prayers in this regard.

“Dear brother, here I have no hesitation to tell that this is a major harvest in the Tamil Nadu church history and it happened through our TV WORK. Thank you for your help and encouragement for propagating the gospel through this media.

“As I already informed you, there will be a one-day meeting in Thanjavur on March 10th. But, one other TV contact, who is a denomination preacher called and requested me to come to his place to tell more about the truth, which I am preaching on TV. That town is beyond Thanjavur by 70 KM and I have agreed to go there on March 9th. After finishing this meeting, I will come to Thanjavur. Please remember these meetings in your prayers.”

Philemon Raja and Kingsly from Madurai, India

Baptism

“We had a good sowing for a plentiful harvest in the near future through the denominational meeting held at Madurai. We all firmly believe that the opportunity was very wisely used and all that had been done is because of you both, who always help us to make it possible.

“Brother and sister, all in these four days of the denomination meeting, we have distributed

  • some one lakh and above tracts,
  • 20,000 stickers having our Television program advertisements to promote our Television program,
  • 20,000 multicolor 8 pages booklet having first lesson of the Seekers Bible course for 4 pages and remaining 4 pages of multicolor advertisements of The Voice of Truth magazine, Tamil magazine, T.V programs, Bible courses in Tamil and English, Braille magazine.
  • We have printed Seekers Bible course in Tamil some 10,000 copies and we are going to send these to those who have requested the first lesson of Seekers, alone, separately, and those who send us the filled first lesson answer will receive the remaining lessons. Brother, we have done this way to reduce the wastage of literature (full Seekers book) and to help the genuine people to get the lessons. Because we want to be very careful in using the money that you and the saints there are sending with much sacrifice and love. And above all it is God’s money.
  • We have printed and distributed 3000 English Seekers through this meeting.
  • We have distributed some 10,000 copies of the The Voice of Truth International and other English books of brother JC publications, that we received from Delhi.
  • Some 100 people have received the Television messages of Brother Philemon on CD.

“Brother and sister, in the last two days of those meetings the crowd was above 80,000 and it was a great hard work we had to do. Every day we worked for 8 hours in the meeting ground. We as a whole family and the Church members of all the 4 congregations. Some 20 members were there to meet the people.

“Brother and sister, we had the fruit for our hard work in the very next day, when 5 new people attended our Bible study, whom we met in the denomination meeting ground. They have promised to come regularly. Also in the next 3 days itself we have received some 100 phone calls, requesting us to send Bible lessons by post and magazine. Also brother, we have received plenty of letters requesting the same. Thank God for His kindness and the good response.”

B. Arjunan in Batlagundu, Tamil Nadu, India

“Here the TV, Radio, and Magazine works are well. A man heard the gospel through our TV program and obeyed and took baptism last month in Dharmapuri District. You know that we are conducting ‘The Readers’ Seminar’ in each District in Tamilnadu. Thus we conducted the 6th Seminar in Vellore District in April 2002. A preacher named Manasemannu had worked in Vellore District and also in Andhra Pradesh for the past few years. Last month he died in accident. I went to that place and preached the Gospel last Friday. This was the first time to me to go and preach the word of God in Andhra Pradesh. We have many viewers and readers there. The family of brother Manasemannu, who died, had arranged this meeting. And then I returned to Tamilnadu and went to Tanjore and preached there also. This meeting was arranged by Brother John Schwartz, who is one of our districts’ preachers. Brother Rajanayagam also attended the meeting and preached the Gospel.

“We would like to have a special class for preachers every March in our state. Please come and share the word of God. Hope our God will strengthen you both to come next year.

“We have good news to share with you. God helped us to make CD and DVD of our TV and Radio Programs. Each CD and DVD contains 4 messages. We have done this work since many viewers and listeners wanted CD and DVD. We hope that these people will get and use them in their occasions and also they will get the possibilities to know the truth and be added in the Church of Christ.”

Thomas Koh in East Malaysia

For a number of years we supplied printed materials, funds for newspaper ads, Bible courses and encouragement to brother Thomas Koh and the small, struggling church in Kuching, East Malaysia. Wayne and Janet continue with that support, visiting Thomas when they can and helping as they are able. Thomas writes of the visits he and brother Ong make to help a new congregation in that area:

“Brother Ong Chee Yong of Johor Baru, West Malaysia has made it a point to come to Kuching once a month to encourage, strengthen and teach the brethren at Sabal Tapang. I go over there once a week to worship as well as preach and edify the brethren. They are still young in their faith and they are taking the Word of God in milk form. They need to be taught sound doctrines so that they will not fall into the trap of liberalism and denominationalism.

“The Bong and Lim families attended the Saturday evening Bible study conducted by brother Ong. The Bong family are Bong, his wife and 2 daughters; whereas Lim are Lim, wife, youngest son and daughter. Ong taught a lesson on the “Existence of God”. He felt that it was important that this topic be taught to show that there is only one supreme being and that we should worship Him only.

“After the lesson, Lim (husband of sister Menggan), Lim Hap San and Corlina Lim (son and daughter of Lim; and Bong Siew Hui (youngest daughter of brother Bong) said that they wanted to be baptized into Christ. The baptisms were to take place early next morning.

“At 8.00 am Lim Thaw Tong, Lim Hap San, Corlina Lim and Bong Siew Hui were baptized by Thomas Koh at the nearby river. It was a joyous moment for all of them. We can really see the joy in brother Lim’s face. Even before his conversion, he has played a big role in promoting the Christian faith and teaching about the Lord’s church in and around his area. Even with his limited education (standard 6), he devoted his evening time to reading the Bible (Iban and English) and leading his family in singing and prayers. What a dedicated person in the faith he is! How I wish that more of our brethren were like him. Let me tell you, brethren: his favorite song is “WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS”. He sings and hums the song when he wakes up every morning; while going into the forest to cut wood, as well as going about in his business. His friends commented that Lim is now so different from his usual self and that they are surprised that he is humming that song all day long. The reason he gives — because he has Jesus in his life!

“We have a real challenge here in Sarawak! Think about it. With a population of 2.2 million and a size as big as Peninsula Malaysia and with on a total of about 30 members of the Lord’s church, it is a big task ahead of us.

“About half the population of Sarawak (1 million) are denominational believers. From what I gather, SIB (Sidang Injil Borneo) church has a total membership of 500,000; making it the largest group in Sarawak. And they are expanding fast. The population of Iban people are about 800,000 to a million, and 95% of them are denominational believers.

“We need your constant prayers that the Lord will provide more workers and that more willing hearts are opened to the pure and undiluted gospel of Christ. The fields are ripe for harvest but the workers are few.

“I should say that the work here had created a record of sorts. Last month, Ong had gone to Subang Jaya church to teach the brethren there how to sing hymns in the Iban language. The intention was to have them recorded on CDs. These CDs will be given to our brethren in Sabal Tapang for them to learn to sing better. At the same time, they will also be our evangelical tools that we can give to our prospects.

“Altogether, the brethren recorded 23 songs. Ong and I were very excited about the CD when we heard it on my car stereo. It is fantastic! Having no knowledge of the Iban language and not knowing how to speak it, the brethren at SJCOC were able to sing the Iban hymns! Many pats on their backs. As far as we know, this is the first CD in Iban with acappela singing. Before leaving Kuching, we got it copied to be given to the brethren in Sabal Tapang.

“Before going up to Sabal Tapang, we went over to Sri Aman to meet up with brother Julian Baja and sister Ritty Molly. The are the only Christians and members of the church of Christ in Sri Aman. Sri Aman is about 120 miles (2.5 hours drive) from Kuching. It is a town of about 100,000 population but with lots of longhouses and villages surrounding it. If the villages are included, the population is much more. About 2/3 of the population here are Ibans.

“We did not manage to meet up with Julian and Ritty as Julain had a prior appointment and also we were short of time. We needed to be reaching Sabal Tapang before the sun set.

“Again, as usual, we were warmly greeted by the brethren at Sabal Tapang as they were anxiously waiting for our coming. It is always a pleasure to see their joyful countenance.

“Brothers Lim and Bong brought us to see the church building they are constructing just by themselves. It is now about 80% completed. The roofing is up and the walls are plastered. What is left now is the ceiling, painting of the walls, flooring tiles, water piping and electricity wirings. According to Lim, the villagers are very impressed with the building and are looking forward to its completion. We believe more will attend the meetings then.

“The brethren were excited about the CD when they heard the singing. Please let it be noted that they really appreciated what the SJCOC brethren had done.

“We had some discussion with brother Lim on how we can further evangelize these places. Lim suggested that on our next trip we go to the next village of about 30 houses which is about 45 minutes walking from Sabal Tapang. The people of this village are of SDA believers. They were converted in the early 70s. This is a good opportunity for us. Another ripe field for harvest.

“Lim also told us that they have family members in Sri Aman that stay in a large longhouse of about 50 doors. That would translate into about 200-300 people. It is accessible by road. Most of them are denominational believers and they do not have a church building there. They have to travel far to worship. Lim wants us to visit them so that they can hear the pure and undiluted gospel. I told Ong (when we were on our way back to Kuching on Sunday) that we should expect some baptisms if we evangelize this village. Then we will have to travel to 2 different places. We have to look at the possibility of Julian and Ritty to help in this place.

“The Lim and Bong family, Julian and Ritty attended the worship service today. Ong taught on the book of James. Everyone was edified. As we are studying along, we are encountering many translation problems in the Iban language. It seems that the people who translated the Iban Bible had no respect at all for the Word of God. It looks like we are going to have a tough time explaining the actual textual meaning. With Iban Bible one can teach false doctrine easily and we are not surprised that it is happening now. We are using the English and Indonesian Bibles to make comparison as well as correction. This is creating awareness among the brethren of the problem of the Iban Bible. Probably in the future, we may have to look into the possibility of producing a more reliable and accurate version.

“We informed Julian and Ritty that we will be visiting them on our next trip in March and also our intention of visiting the village of Lim’s family members in Sri Aman.

“At the same time, we were discussing with Lim about his son, Lim Hap San, who had shown interest in becoming a full-time preacher, who will take care of the flock in Sabal Tapang. Both Lim and wife are keen for Hap San to be a full time preacher if there is support for him. He is 20 years and completed Form 5. If he makes this decision, Hap San will be trained at the Kuching Church of Christ for at least 2 years. We will prepare the curriculum and also will look for the financial support. That was the intention of the supporting brethren in US (especially brother Wayne Barrier); that we produce more preachers and they in turn will do evangelistic work in other parts of Sarawak. Hap San will help in evangelizing the Sabal Tapang areas. There is lot of work to be done here in Sarawak.”

Reuben Emperado in the Philippines

Brother Reuben Emperado is a tireless evangelist, busy in radio work (you have helped them have more than 20 weekly programs in various parts of the Philippines for many years), follow-up evangelism, and

“I just came from Negros to attend a very fruitful meeting initiated by the local leaders in Tayasan. We started a ministry that would hopefully revitalized and restore many Christians who had been complacent in the past. The acronym of the project is N.E.G.R.O.S.. Which stands for Negros, Evangelism, for Growth, Restoration, Outreach & Strengthening.

“After our meeting at Matauta, a group of PIBS student went to Guihulngan, Negros Oriental (which is only 25 kms from Tayasan) on Sunday afternoon to conduct a home Bible Study with four families with whom Eusebio Catherin had been studying for the past six months. I was asked to conduct the lesson on “The Importance of Obedience”. The interest was so intense that the study lasted for four hours, which I did not mind. Those who attended decided to be baptized this coming Sunday (February 18). The owner of the house, who is a businessman, has already offered their home as the worship place for the new church once they are baptized.

“God is opening more doors in this area: our radio program will have an additional time on a new station in Guihulngan. Two slots were offered to us per week, an hour per slot, with a very reasonable price. The station is local. This is good timing because of this newly established congregation in this town. Let us pray for these babes in Christ in Guihulngan, Negros. By the way, Guihulngan is the biggest town in the Philippines, land-area wise.

“I just arrived yesterday here in Cebu, and I am leaving again today at 2 a.m. for Kalibo Aklan. The work is getting very exciting and it is very encouraging to see how the local brethren are taking the initiative to take the Gospel to their own people.

“Our training school is doing well and it is a matter of time that we will have our own property. Our enrollment has climb up to almost 40 students per session. The students have shown maturity and confidence in the ministry. We develop the five ‘E’ Principles: Educate, Enlighten, Empower, Encourage, Evangelize.”

Good Things and Problems Here at Home

We continue with preparation of materials for the World Evangelism School of Missions. We had a two-day session in January (developing the materials for The Biblical Pattern for Mission Work and World Religions and Cultures) and a one-day meeting in February (The Missionary-Sponsor Relationship and Reporting). Since Wayne and Janet are out of the country during March, there won’t be another session until the latter part of April, when we will be preparing materials on Finance, Fund Raising and Financial Management).

May Missionary Retreat

May 10-12 we expect to be involved in a Missionary Retreat at the Maywood Bible Camp in Hamilton, Alabama. In addition to missionaries and their families, elders, deacons, and all Christians who are concerned about evangelizing the world are encouraged to attend. Just let us know you plan to come, so a place can be reserved for you. Send your information to Wayne Barrier, 3000 County Road 10, Florence, AL 35633, 256-766-2807; e-mail: wbarrier@HiWAAY.net. You will be put on a mailing list to receive all information about speakers, timings, costs, etc.

Honorary Doctorate from Heritage Christian University

I was informed recently that Heritage Christian University plans to award an Honorary Doctorate Degree to me on May 12, in recognition of our efforts in mission work. We are humbled by their decision.

Satan’s Attempts to Thwart Outreach through Literature

We have been told that in May the US Postal Service will discontinue all overseas surface mail, which means that the M-bags of books and magazines that we have been sending at about $1.00 per pound will then cost between $8 and $9 a pound by air. A mailing of The Voice of Truth International to all of the names in our foreign address list has been costing more than $6,000 by surface mail. The same mailing after May will exceed $50,000, which would be impossible. We have been talking to Ron Pottberg, who works with World Bible School, about having his help to set up a system like theirs for mailing by air at a reduced rate because of the quantity involved. That would work for small packets, but we understand that even that rate is more than $3.00 per pound, so we have to find a better solution for the magazine. It is our thinking now that we will arrange with a brother in India, in Africa, and in South America, to print overseas quantities and to mail them out to their respective general areas, using our current mailing list. This involves making considerable adjustments to our current procedure — but, you know Satan’s best schemes often work against him! We feel sure that, when all the details are covered, this will be an even better way to get the magazines printed and distributed than the current system. Pray for us that the best solution will be worked out.

Volume 53 of The Voice of Truth International and Other Printing

Volume 53 will be delivered in a few days. This issue focuses on The Sojourners, retired couples who do all types of “mission” work in the States, especially for small congregations that need help.

We mentioned in the previous report the need for funds to print a number of tracts and also some of the study books that we supply for evangelism outreach, jail ministries, and WBS at 75 cents a copy. Since this minimal charge does not cover the printing cost on a number of the books, we would be grateful for any help that any of you could give toward the printing of more literature. Our book “business” is not for the purpose of making money — whatever is generated by sales is put back into the production and printing of other books. And on a regular basis we donate large quantities for shipment in crates overseas. When we learn of a group going on a mission trip, we encourage them to take as many books as they can handle. If they can pay the 75 cents per copy, fine; if not, we donate them. Our goal is just to leave something in the hands of people who want to learn more. Please — if you can — help us to continue to do this.

HELP NEEDED IN WINONA

If there are those, reading this report, which have ever considered becoming a team member in this work, please contact us. We need more help to take care of unfinished work, and to enable the scope of the work to be enlarged. Please prayerfully consider these needs, knowing the urgency of the situation, and communicate with us concerning your interest. I can tell you from 45 years of experience with it that there is no better or more exciting way to spend one’s life! How wonderful it would be if we could have another 45 years of the same! Isn’t that recommendation enough to make you want to look further into the matter?

We want you to know that we love you and feel deeply the partnership with you in reaching out to others with the Gospel. Thank you for all you do to enable this work to continue. God keep us all in His care.

Our love, J.C. and Betty
